My 7-year-old boy hesitated to play basketball in the driveways on the block with his buddies, which worried me at first, because I didn’t know exactly why.
He lacked the confidence and enthusiasm that boys his age seem to have when given permission to go outside and play hoops with their friends. This was especially noticeable when the game included one of his more experienced peers, a boy who is considered “good” by many of his friends because he plays in an organized league. While boys were playing on the block, I could feel his anxiety develop as he looked out and quickly became quiet and withdrawn, indifferent to taking part in the excitement outside.
